Challenge 5

WHAT IS CULTURAL IDENTITY AND CULTURAL HYBRIDITY? AND HOW ARE THESE CONCEPTS IMPORTANT FOR PROFESSIONAL PEDAGOGICAL WORK?

We were talking about the meaning of cultural identity and hybridity. This last one represents a mixture emerged from cultural contacts; a mixing of cultures. The other one, cultural identity, is the identity of an individual or group (understanding identity as a conception and expression, of an individual or group, of their affiliations).

So, our culture is the result of mixing different cultures for years, the result of globalisation. Traditions (Christmas, Easter holidays...), music, food, Ghandi... are examples of that mixture. And also the language: Danish language has German parts, English, etc.

It was difficult for me choosing and classifying the most important aspects in my life. It’s not easy, but it helps you to understand and to know your own live.
This was the result:

It’s interesting to observe all the different pie charts of the class: each one was totally different to the others. This is because everyone has different priorities. Anyway, the majority of the class put family and friends as the most important thing.

After that we made a map with the most important ideas.

These concepts are very important when you’re working as a teacher. And also usefull to integrate someone new in the classroom: trough common points of the different cultures. It’s difficult entry in a class where everything is new, different of your own culture. Moreover, the rest of pupils are interested to know more about the new one. So you (as a teacher) can use that: the differences and the common points. It’s important treating differences from a positive perspective.
